REVIEW / ALEX SUDHEIM
‘Victoria Verbaan’s delicate illustrations and cuneiform paintings occupy a stylistic sensibility that somehow manages to fuse the aesthetic of Toulouse Lautrec with that of Sex and the City. Here quasi-naturalist depictions of free-spirited urban existence are painted with Lautrec’s colour palette yet Verbaan also makes sure that you can read the “Blahnik” label on the casually discarded pair of designer pumps.
Verbaan’s love of the breezy and whimsical creates a mood that escapes superficiality by virtue of its sheer fascination with its subject matter. The titles of her work could be from a Fitzgerald story – or an Easton Ellis novel for that matter – in their tipsy bon vivance.’
